Capturing golf from the ground up
I’m Calum Smith, a passionate golfer and photographer based in the south of England.
Golf has been a huge part of my life for many years and, as a single-figure golfer, I’ve always enjoyed experiencing the variety, challenge and character that different courses have to offer. Photography has long been another interest of mine, but it wasn’t until I purchased a camera for a safari holiday that it truly took hold. The images I captured on that trip sparked a passion for photography and inspired me to combine it with my love of golf.
Today, my work focuses on capturing golf courses as they are experienced by those who play them. Rather than concentrating solely on traditional marketing imagery, I aim to showcase the moments golfers remember: standing on the tee visualising a shot, navigating the strategy of a hole, or approaching a green framed by its natural surroundings. My goal is to document the character, design and atmosphere that make each course unique.
I collaborate with golf clubs across the UK, providing high-quality photography in exchange for course access and playing opportunities. This approach allows me to immerse myself in each course, understand how it plays, and create an authentic collection of images that clubs can use across their websites, social media channels and wider communications.
Each project is approached with a focus on natural light, thoughtful composition and attention to detail. Whether photographing a classic heathland layout, a mature parkland course or more rugged terrain, my objective remains the same: to present the course as it is truly experienced by golfers.
As I continue to visit and photograph courses throughout the UK, I am building a growing portfolio that celebrates the diversity, beauty and architectural character of golf.
